Have you graduated from an online school with a psychology degree and landed a job?

If you have graduated from an online school with a degree in psychology, I would like to know if it was difficult to find a job. What school did you graduate from and was it APA acredited? Did you achieve a Master’s or Doctorate degree? Was it very difficult to find a job in your field after graduating from an online school? Where are you working now, and in what area of psychology? Thanks, your answers will help me in my decision about going back to school!

First off, an online doctorates degree will never, ever, ever, ever, be viewed as even a shadow of a real PhD. Ever. A PhD is the highest degree possible, and the idea behind it is that you will spend 3 to 7 years (depending on how fast your write, and if you enter with a master’s degree or not) with a group of faculty members constantly debating, arguing, and refining your ideas. You will literally spend 40 plus hours a week studying. An online doctorate degree could never offer that. No one who has gone through that process will ever look at an online PhD as any wear near what they have been through, and since some Dr. will ultimately be determining if you get a job……. you can figure out what that means.

Getting an online degree is acceptable in certain circumstances, say if you are working full time and there are no programs near by that offer night classes. The degree will always be looked down upon, especially if it is from an online only school like U of Phoenix, but if you have a valid excuse (I work full time and am a single parent, etc.) then some employers might let that fly, especially if you already have a job in the field.

Personally I would not waste my money on must online degrees. Just the truth, I hate seeing people waste their money on them.

Hi,

I think it’s perfectly fine to get an undergrad degree online, as long as it’s from an accredited school. If you are worried about employers taking it seriously, just get it from a real state university. Then employers won’t know you got it online at all; it will be as if you attended the school in person. There is no reason why you wouldn’t be able to land a job. I also think Masters degrees are just fine. On the other hand, a PhD in Psychology sounds a little crazy to me because being a psychologist involves interaction with patients and clinical work; and of course there is no way you can do that online. Keep in mind, in order to do anything Psychology related you have to get a PhD. Otherwise, you’ll be stuck doing counseling somewhere. Psychology is kind of the hot major right now along with forensics. Everyone is doing it.

P.S. That guy above me sounds like a real snob doesn’t he?!
